Elaine

September 10, 2026

She might be a little hard to find, but longtime, bookkeeping volunteer Elaine Baker is usually hidden away in the Military Missions computer office on Wednesday afternoons. She was born in Lebanon, Kentucky, grew up in Springfield, Kentucky, and moved to the Lexington area in 1980.  A graduate of the University of Kentucky (Go Cats!) Elaine retired after 27 years of teaching Special Education in Jessamine and Fayette counties.

She searched for volunteer opportunities through a Lexington/Fayette County website and spent some time volunteer tutoring, working at God’s Pantry and other nonprofits. But then! it was only natural Elaine would soon discover Military Missions –  after all, her husband served in the Navy and the Air Force, her nephew served in the National Guard in both Afghanistan and Iraq, her father fought in World War II, and her uncles served in different branches of the Military.

Elaine started work at MM in 2019 and found herself eventually handling donations, computer log sheets and receipt letters by 2020. But don’t look for her in April and October, when she migrates to the internationally prestigious Keeneland Track during the world-class Thoroughbred race meets. In the past, she worked in the gift shop, but this fall she will be handling Clubhouse Guest Services.

In addition to her stepchildren, she and her husband have a daughter who is moving soon from Ohio to Utah for Proctor & Gamble. Elaine shared that her daughter is grown up enough to handle the move – but will Mama handle it? Elaine loves to garden, walk for exercise, read, and travel –  especially internationally.
